Cod Liver Oil - Real Health Benefits For The Whole Family

This Article Written by Louise Dop

Have you always assumed that cod liver oil was strictly for the elderly? Well think again. Scientists now believe it has many important uses beyond the easing of stiff joints and you could be benefiting from them right now.

Taken by North Sea fishermen for centuries and fed to wartime babies, cod liver oil is familiar to most of us for the relief of arthritic conditions. Over many years, detailed studies have established its key properties while ongoing research is now confirming many long-held beliefs about its advantages.

Cod liver oil contains:

Vitamin A - essential for the immune system, bone growth, night vision and cell regeneration.

Vitamin D - required by the body for the absorption and use of calcium and potassium for bone growth.

Omega 3 fatty acids - in particular, two fatty acids, EPA and DHA have been highlighted as important in the fight against coronary heart disease. These natural properties are known by experts to have a wide range of positive effects on the body. These include:

Healthy skin
Improved resistance to infection
Strong bones, teeth and nails
Relief for arthritic joints
Reduced risk of heart attacks
Enhanced night vision
Promotion of normal brain development in unborn babies

Many brands of cod liver oil are available from pharmacies, health stores and supermarkets. Although quite expensive, it is worth investing in a good quality product to obtain the full range of health benefits. Look for a high Omega 3 content as some of the cheaper oils have very low levels.

Check the dosage instructions, usually 1 or 2 teaspoons is recommended for your daily intake. The down side of cod liver oil is its extremely unpleasant smell and taste. Capsules are available but as before, check the Omega 3 content. If, however, you decide to persevere with the oil in liquid form, you will probably get used to the taste after a while and it.s certainly worth the effort. Many people find it helps to combine the dose with food or a drink of fruit juice.

Women who are pregnant or breast feeding should consult their doctor before taking cod liver oil. It is worth remembering that you can gain similar nutritional advantages by increasing you intake of oily fish such as mackerel, and herring.Fresh sardines are delicious grilled and deep fried whitebait make a tasty snack. Add an extra topping of anchovies to your pizza for good measure.

As current trials in schools to measure the effects of fish oil on under achieving children are already showing dramatic results, it is becoming clear that cod liver oil could benefit the whole family. Although, recently, some doubt has been cast over the use of nutritional supplements in general, the compelling case for cod liver oil is one that is hard to ignore.
